CFFJAC Women's Commission Hosts 2009 Firefighter Recruitment Fairs

When the going gets tough, the tough choose firefighting.

Nearly 1,000 young men and women did, packing the 2009 Firefighter Recruitment Fairs at the Candidate Physical Ability Testing (CPAT) Centers in Sacramento, Livermore and Orange.

Sponsored by the California Fire Fighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (CFFJAC) and its Commission to Recruit Women for the Fire Service, the recruitment fairs were designed to give candidates - particularly women recruits who may have never considered a career in firefighting - an up close and personal look at what it takes to be a firefighter.

The four-hour fairs offered a thorough glimpse at the career of a firefighter, complete with "A Day in the Life of a Firefighter" video screenings, Q&A's with female firefighters, apparatus displays and recruiters from fire departments across the state on site.

But nothing gave candidates a better feel for the job at hand than the demos of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). Dressed in comfortable sweats and T-shirts, jeans and running shoes, candidates lined up to try their hand at the firefighter test that proves you're "fit for duty." Candidates pulled hose, threw ladders and climbed stairs, while firefighter proctors were stationed at each of the eight events to give candidates tips on how to take - and pass - the test.

Candidates were then invited to cool down with a drink and something hot off the barbecue. The whole event was free to attend.

"Our economy may have slowed down, but we'll always be looking for the best and brightest to join the California fire service," said California Professional Firefighters President Lou Paulson. CPF co-sponsors the CFFJAC along with the California State Fire Marshal. "The Firefighter Recruitment Fairs give us a chance each year to reach out and show potential candidates how rewarding this career can be."
