CFFJAC Opens CPAT Testing Center in Sacramento
The CFFJAC’s groundbreaking system for testing the next generation of California firefighters is expanding again, with the announcement of the third CPAT Testing Center.
Located a stone’s throw from the State Capitol, the new Sacramento CFFJAC CPAT Testing Center is dedicated solely to the administration of the CPAT – the Candidate Physical Ability Test.

Sponsored by the California Fire Fighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (CFFJAC), the CPAT Testing Centers allow would-be firefighters to get their physical ability certification on their own schedule, while saving fire departments the expense of conducting their own test.
Two existing CPAT Testing Centers – located in Orange and Dublin – have already administered the CPAT to more than 20,000 would-be firefighters. Earlier this year the CFFJAC CPAT became the exclusive physical ability test provider for CAL FIRE. CAL FIRE joins more than 100 fire departments around California that require CPAT certification as a prerequisite for applying to become a firefighter.
“CAL FIRE is the largest fire department in the state, and one of the largest in the nation,” said CFFJAC Chair/Administrator Dan Terry. “With the CPAT’s tremendous growth, it was important that we expand our capacity with a centrally-located testing facility.”
In order to expedite testing for firefighter candidates around the state, CFFJAC has acquired the facilities of CPAT USA. Candidates who have signed up to take the CPAT through CPAT USA should plan to attend their test date as scheduled. Testing at the new Sacramento CPAT center is scheduled to begin October 1, 2008. Candidates may, however, schedule tests immediately online, by going to www.cpatonline.org.
The CPAT is the industry-standard physical ability testing system developed cooperatively by the International Association of Fire Chiefs (representing management) and the International Association of Fire Fighters (representing labor). Those who pass receive the CPAT Card of Completion, certifying they have “the right stuff”.
