Founded in 2000 when American River Fire and Sacramento Fire merged, the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District serves nearly 640,000 citizens over a 417 square mile area covering Sacramento and Placer Counties. The Department currently has 42 fire stations and is the seventh largest fire district in California.

Due to its large coverage area, Sac Metro Fire operates a central 9-1-1 dispatch center and a unified communications system to keep all fire companies connected. The Department includes a Training Division, EMS Division, Special Ops Division, Health and Safety Division and a Community Emergency Response Teams program (C.E.R.T.).

The Sacramento Metro Fire District has been affiliated with the CFFJAC program since 1997 and its personnel are proudly represented by Sacramento Area Fire Fighters, Local #522.
